Home - How to Build a Recording Studio

This site describes the process of building a music recording studio, constructed during the lockdown of 2020-21. It is both a construction log and also a guide for the complete beginner on exactly what is required to build their own recording/music studio. Its purpose is to help all those looking to embark on a similar project, by providing in depth detail of each stage of the project, as well as many hints and tips about construction picked up along the way.

Some brief background - I'm an engineering graduate from the UK, with zero previous construction experience.  After quitting my job in September 2020, I set out to teach myself how to build my dream studio, almost entirely from online Youtube videos. The build took approximately six months, and involved the conversion of an existing garage shell from a basic workshop into a soundproofed music studio and rehearsal space of around 25m^2.

Existing Garage

Here is the existing garage building, before any work began:

And this is what the inside of the garage looked like initially:

Build in progress

Here's a few shots of some of the construction of the "room within a room" that you will hear a lot more about on this site:

The full build process is detailed under The Build tab, with one article about every major part of the process. This allows you to jump straight to a specific area of interest as desired, or to read through the entire construction journey to view the process as a whole.

Throughout the site, links are provided to the exact materials/services that were used for this project. This is something that would have been extremely helpful to me during the construction, as most online resources on the subject are specific to the United States. Any purchases made through these links may earn a small commission, which will be put towards the upkeep of this site.
